Monday was extremely humid – 91% humidity to be exact.
At work I had to run a few errands to the UES so I felt that awful heat. By the time it was my lunch break, I had already made a list of hair salons in the neighbourhood. As soon as I was on break I called 3 places to chop off my hair. Long story short, 45 minutes later I had cut off 4 inches of my hair and went back to work with a sleek bob.
I don’t think that I was in the office for more than 1 hour at at time I was running all around New York!

I asked a stranger to take a picture of me to show off: my new hair, my errand sneakers, the top secret bag that I took to the UES (names are blurred out).

Tuesday was just another work day. It is quite difficult to be positive about my task for the day: organizing the candelabara, candle, and votive shelves. This was not exactly written in my approved J-1 application training plan….
After work I went home to find some groceries for dinner. I decided to stop at Seneca Garden II (Polish-American Deli) for some unique groceries. What they didn’t have was fresh produce BUT they had fresh pierogi! It felt like I had travelled to Poland: every single word in the store was polish, there was a large barrel of pickles and I was the only native English speaker! I ended up getting some pierogi for dinner with a slice of cake. I asked the counter girl what she recommended and she pointed to a layer cake and said “this is weird-good” – it was Medovik, a Russian honey cake. So I bought a slice and she was 100% right, it was “weird-good”.

I was it fun? No, but the Johnson side of me was jumping for joy at how clean it looked!

Wednesday was the very first office workout! What is that you may ask? It is the not mandatory (but mandatory) outdoors workout at 6am, led by my bosses personal trainer! Because the workout is located in the Flatiron district so early in the morning, it meant that I had to wake up at 4:30am in order to make it there in time – yay! The personal trainer is an absolute sweetheart compared to my various ex-coaches (figure skating, track and field, field hockey). He emphazied that because it was my first workout, I should take it slow and allow my body to adjust. That’s nice of him but did I follow that… uh obviously not. I saw this workout (as did most of the office) as a competiton – who can do the most squats, who can run laps the fastest etc. By the end of the hour+ session, my legs were wobbly but I felt SUPER energized. It was a great way to begin my day.
After work I met up with my friend from the Netherlands again for dessert at the cutest dessert cafe – Ferrara Bakery & Cafe. We decided to each get the trio-dessert option, it probably took us a good 15 minutes to pick from their huge selection. I would HIGHLY recommend coming here.

Thursday was an exciting day because it was an event day! I can’t say much because of my NDA but let’s just say that my office plans events for the 1% of the 1%… It was truly a unique experience. The day began at 8am and I left at 11pm, I could not complain because I was paid for every hour on-site (finally). I was lucky to be one of the two interns that stayed during the event to help our managers and witness the Run of Show. We all wore matching black dresses (supplied by the office) and wore our own black heels. Let me tell you, moving furniture up and down stairs in heels is a dangerous task. I came home extremely tired, and hungry but happy because setting up/attending this event was exactly what I had envisioned in the months leading up to New York.

Compared to Thursday, Friday was slow.
On my lunch break I took a nap in park on the grass – it was amazing. I already miss being surrounded by nature.
After work I went to the library to check out some books! Did you know that there are over 92 locations of the New York Public Library? Luckily the main branch is close to my work so I get to enjoy the largest selection as well as the iconic marble exterior, the fountain, and the beautiful Rose reading room.

Xoxo,
Tara
