New York: Week Thirteen

Monday, July 29, 2019

I took Monday off from work (the only weekday that I took off) so that I could go to the Hamptons by myself! I had planned on leaving on Sunday but all the accommodations options for that night were $400+…

I took the Hampton Jitney (Bus from manhattan) at 6am so that I would get the most out of my day. I couldn’t decide on a destination, so while I was sitting on the bus I was trying to pick what place in the Hamptons to go to. I ended up picking Montauk because of a song that I liked. Luckily because the bus ride was long, I was able to research & plan my day.

It was a great idea, I LOVED IT. Whoever says you can’t do the Hamptons for one day and for a low price isn’t planning well….

Here is my official guide to how to spend a day in Montauk:

  • Transportation: Hampton Jitney ($30 each way, purchase the earliest ticket and the latest ticket, pick up & drop off near the chamber of commerce), Hampton Hopper to get around Montauk (use an app, free during certain periods).
  • Ocean: Kirk Park Beach is a 5 minute walk and free! Waves were very rough, not good for children.
  • Activities: Star Island Yacht Club (sail trip find Groupon, go on weekday), Gosman’s (cute little “village”) & watch the ocean, free concert (grounds of the Montauk Farmer’s Market).
  • Bathrooms (no purchase needed): Kirk Park Beach Parking Lot, Gurneys hotel.
  • Food: bring your own picnic from home – if needed IGA is near beach (expensive), Van Leeuwen ice cream (Yacht Club gift shop), oysters (Gosman’s), fish tacos (SHOWFISH), baked goods (Montauk Bake Shoppe)

For the remainder of the week, everyone is out of office for an event except for myself, the new interns and the CFO. It meant that every single phone call, email, task was given to me to then distribute amongst the other interns… let’s just say we were extremely busy.

I was dog sitting as my manager was out of state which was the perfect way to maximize my last week in New York.

I had entered & won the lottery for tickets to the Late Show with Steven Colbert. I invited a housemate to come with me under the condition that they be there exactly at 6:30 (enough time for me to run home, run with the dog then head over to the studio). He arrives exactly 1 hour late, I was not happy, especially because the seats are assigned by order in line. All of a sudden, I get a tap on the shoulder and asked to follow a man in a suit. We follow the men and they take us into the studio and announce that we have been hand selected to be in the front row because of our…. ENERGY. About an hour later we were escorted to the FRONT ROW! We watched a couple hours of the democratic debate (which I loved as a former politics graduate) then all of a sudden we were being coached by the stage manager to stand, clap, cheer, and laugh! We were forbidden to take pictures inside the studio but we managed to get a few pics! Although it was amazing to sit from row and to watch how a live show works, I do regret not bringing extra clothing as it was FREEZING in the studio.

So Tuesday was great. Steven Colbert high-fived me and I made it on international television. How’s that for a New York memory?

Wednesday was my favourite day at work ever. After a long discussion with the client, my boss, and my manager I was allowed to do a table showing all by myself. Now what is a table showing you may ask? Before going forward and making a downpayment for an event, most clients want to get a “feel” for the general design and quality of the proposed decor/event. The most simple way to do this is through a table showing at the venue. The table is set up as it would be for the event, the caterers prepare samples from the proposed menu and the clients can then understand the vision. It was a lot of organizing but the clients and my boss were all extremely happy with the results. I loved doing it, I had my team of lovely interns helping me and the hotel staff. Apparently this is the first and only time an intern has been allowed to do this for a client – go me!

My beautiful white sneakers I wore for running errands were on their last legs…

After work I went for a run with the puppy then headed over to Queens to move out of my place. The last thing I did before I left was to go to all the polish stores within a 3 minute walk (3) and purchased all of their Strawberry flavoured Milkas. It was extremely difficult to carry all my things from Queens to Chelsea but I did it. What I noticed again was the lack of accessibility in New York, broken elevators or no elevators, cramped spaces etc.

Friday was another hectic day in the office as we were still only 4 people…

For lunch I stopped in a thrift store and picked up a $1 book then went to the vegetarian chain Eat by Chloe and got a guac burger. It was a perfect afternoon.

After work, I met up with one of my friends to try out some fun places!

We first went to the LRoom Cafe where we got sparkly lattes (how cute) and some crazy fun desserts. After that we went to FLEX MUSSELS and I had one of the best mussel dishes of my life. We sat outside on their tiny patio and made friends with the people around us, it was so fun.

Thanks for reading!

Xoxo,

Tara
